Why Europe cannot be just NATO
In the night of Magdeburg, Europe discovered itself, as it has for a long time, fragile, without the certainties of Adenauer and De Gaulle, without security, without the ability to manage globalisation, the tensions coming from different worlds. The madness of a globalisation in which a doctor, not an artless desperado, right-wing Saudi accused Germany, in particular Merkel, of the Islamisation of Europe. This follows the rules of Beckett and Jonesco’s theatre of the absurd, were it not for the five dead and the flood of injured. Germany, the heart of Europe, now in recession, wakes up fragile and powerless.
This is testified to by both Putin and Zelensky, who in different words, in form but not in substance, do not believe in and do not point to the old continent as an interlocutor, but both invoke Trump as the solver of their feud of eastern autocrats. Europe has come into play as a purveyor of arms and money, Scholz alone has declared 30 bn, to defend an eastern flank that for years was the commercial obsession of Germany and the countries that wanted to expand. The attacks in Paris, London, Belgium, today in Germany, always leave us astonished, insecure, fragile, powerless, both in terms of intelligence and defence. We follow a Moroccan drug dealer with wiretaps, we send anyone to trial for a joint or two beers, but in front of a reactionary madman who carries out a massacre we remain impaled like useless statues of once upon a time a Europe that grew in Peace, without internal and external enemies, rich and prosperous.
Let us wake up because it is no longer like that, we are crock pots between iron pots in the east and west, south and east, we are the Christians, despite being secularised and atheist, for the believing Islamists, we are colonisers for the Africans who are deviously supported by the Russians and especially the Chinese, certainly not for free. We are dispersed in a thousand political rivulets, small college interests while our companies, see automotive, are defeated in the meat grinder of globalisation, we have excellences, especially in Italy and Germany, without strategic and global breath. We have gone from being a rich demographic stork to being small and black Calimeri, but above all sterile, with few children and many pensioners. This demographic thing has overturned the clichés, there are more children in Denmark now than in backward Sicily. European children are hope, the human capital that we reject at the borders of the mare nostrum where Europe was born, in the Greek and then Christian myth. By now we are only NATO, in a line of strategic interests that we could easily call ‘Norse‘, see the appointments on Defence and Foreign Affairs in the European Commission. NATO, the name says it all, is North Atlantic, a pact between Vikings, including the Ukrainians, who fight no matter what, and the Russian Viking Putin knows this. We seem to have gone back a thousand years, with Trump wanting Greenland, to the days of Eric the Red and Odin with his Valkyries. Happy Walhalla to all.
