In response to this scenario, a group of former Meta and Google DeepMind researchers founded Mistral AI in Paris in 2023. The goal was clear: to build a credible European alternative in the field of generative AI.

Thanks to strategic investments and rapid growth, Mistral has become one of the main symbols of European technological autonomy research. The recent agreement with the French Ministry of the Armed Forces further strengthens this trajectory.

A strategic agreement for French Defence

The French Armed Forces Ministry has concluded a framework agreement with Mistral AI. The agreement enables the armed forces, research institutes and public agencies of the Ministry to access the company’s advanced solutions.

Military personnel will also be able to engage directly with Mistral’s technical teams. The agreement also involves strategic entities, including bodies related toenergy, aerospace research and maritime security.

Coordination of the initiative is entrusted to theMinisterial Agency for Defence Artificial Intelligence (AMIAD). The structure will ensure operational consistency and institutional control over the use of the technologies adopted.

Strategic autonomy and data control

According to Mistral AI, the agreement strengthens thestrategic autonomy of French Defence. The project is part of the vision of asovereign, independentAI at the service of national security.

The control of data and critical technologies remains a central element of the arrangement. Defence retains supervision over the tools used and the infrastructure involved.

The initiative also responds to the political guidelines promoted by President Emmanuel Macron. France aims to reduce dependence on non-European suppliers in areas of high strategic sensitivity.Artificial intelligence is considered an essential lever in this path.
